Destination BC – Vancouver, Coast & Mountains Tourism Resiliency Program

In the midst of this global pandemic, our province is adjusting to a new normal, and we know that the immediate impacts of COVID-19 are being felt by tourism businesses across British Columbia.


As entrepreneurs try to figure out their own unique path forward, tourism businesses in BC identified the need for support to help navigate the range of resources and options available to our industry.


Together with the other five tourism regions, Destination BC, and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture with support from go2HR, Indigenous Tourism BC, the Tourism Industry Association of BC, and Community DMOs, are activating the BC Tourism Resiliency Network to provide BC tourism businesses with meaningful, one-on-one support to navigate government resources and expert advice, and work towards eventual recovery.


Their role in managing the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains (VCM) region has always been to work collaboratively with partners, and to connect industry to the various programs available through Destination BC and others, and their work on this program further supports their commitment to the VCM region.


The Vancouver, Coast & Mountains Tourism Resiliency Program includes two components:

  1. Tourism businesses will be paired with a Program Advisor in their own region who will provide guidance throughout their journey to long-term resiliency. Through a needs assessment, Program Advisors will facilitate customized support for each business that includes navigating available provincial and federal supports and access to Program Experts in areas such as human resources.
  2. A digital resource hub – Featuring webinars, information bulletins, and additional resources specific to the needs of BC’s tourism businesses.

Destination Canada – Sustaining Canada’s Tourism Sector Through COVID19 Report

Destination BC has commission McKinsey and Company to compile a report on Tourism for the Canadian Government. This is the first part of the report and the balance will be released in sections. It shows the impact of Covid -19 across the board.  Members should be aware of the information included and note the impact in BC has been far greater that in other provinces.

Road to Recovery Webinar Series – Available May 12 – July 7

We know that the impacts of COVID-19 are being felt across British Columbia, and will continue to be felt by the tourism industry long into the future.


As tourism businesses plan their own unique path forward, they will need support on the road to recovery, to adapt and overcome a pandemic that has touched so many people around the world.


We all want a better, brighter future for tourism in BC. Destination BC believes that through meaningful collaboration and support, together we can re-ignite BC’s tourism industry, propel tourism businesses forward, accelerate growth amongst destinations, and plan for a successful future in our province.


To support this, Destination BC is launching a series of webinars for tourism businesses, titled: The Road to Recovery: Supporting BC’s Tourism Industry After COVID-19.


The series will take you through ‘checkpoints’ to collectively consider and work on as we move towards recovery in the travel and tourism sector. Each webinar will cover a subject related to the travel market, the visitor experience, business operations, digital marketing and more.

Destination BC COIVD-19 Webinars

Destination Canada is hosting regular webinars, sharing their approach amid the COVID-19 situation and providing information on available federal support initiatives. They will have industry partners, representatives from government as well as applicable businesses join to provide the most up-to-date information and resources.

go2HR: BC’s Restart Plan: What Tourism and Hospitality Businesses Need to Know

After much anticipation of BC’s four-phase Restart Plan, tourism and hospitality employers across the province can now prepare to restart their business operations.


BC is currently in Phase one of the plan. Phase two is set to begin in mid-May, permitting the opening of more non-essential businesses including restaurants, cafes, pubs and day-use parks. Providing transmission rates remain low or decline, Phase three of the plan will begin in June, at which time there will be a broader reopening of hotels, resorts and parks (including some overnight camping).


All employers will be required to demonstrate that they can operate safely and meet the requirements set out by BC’s Provincial Health Officer and WorkSafeBC has been tasked with providing sector specific guidelines.


Businesses that don’t currently have COVID-19 Safety Plans will need to develop and implement one, while businesses that have operated during the pandemic may need to update their COVID-19 Safety Plans to fit with the latest health and safety guidelines and best practices.


As the Health and Safety Association for BC’s tourism and hospitality industry, go2HR is liaising with WorkSafeBC, industry associations, Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture, RDMOs and TIA BC to assist tourism industry employers with the development and implementation of appropriate COVID-19 Safety Plans for their businesses.


go2HR, with input from industry, has also developed a COVID-19 Best Practices template, offering health and safety tips and sample best practices for employers and workers to follow, as you look towards business recovery. You can find this template as well as additional information about the provincial restart plan, other best practices templates and training resources on the go2HR website.
