Pemberton Winter Fishing

Just because it's wintertime doesn't mean it's time to put away the fishing rod. In fact the wintertime can be the best time to pull up a healthy trout fish from one of Pemberton's fresh water lakes. When the lakes freeze in Pemberton it's time to trade the boats for the heated huts.

Pemberton offers some the best ice fishing for trout in Canada. There are 7 species of fish that you can ice fish for in the Pemberton and Whistler areas. These species of fish include:

  • Rainbow Trout
  • Coastal Cutthroat Trout
  • Kokanee
  • Whitefish
  • Bull Trout
  • Brook Trout
  • and Dolly Varden

The winter time is the one of the best times to catch a trout fish in Pemberton due to the size they reach over the winter months. Trout feed vigorously during the fall months in anticipation of the long cold winter. As a result the trout reach staggering size. It is not uncommon for Bull Trouts to reach 20 Lbs, Rainbow 12 Lbs and other species to max out around 5 Lbs. These weights are particularly right for the trout species.

How to Ice Fish

Ice fishing is as simple as finding a frozen lake and drilling a hole for your rod and line. Of course we never advise you head out to a lake unless you are familiar with the ice conditions or have spoken to an expert in the field.

The easiest way to drill a hole is using some sort of power drill with a large drill bit. You will need a hole about 8 to 10 inches wide to pull out your trout. Ice fishing rods can be purchased and are often recommended for this type of fishing as they are easier to handle in tight quarters, such as an ice fishing hut and show action when you get a bite.

Some of the different types of ice fishing bait include live bait or shiny spinners. Some other words of wisdom while ice fishing is to dress warm and always make sure to pack in/pack out your trash.
