Get Ready To Cheer - Ironman is Coming

2013 IRONMAN Canada Banner

We're pretty excited that the IRONMAN Canada is coming back for a second year -- and the cycling portion of the event runs right through Pemberton.

The event builds on the legacy of the 2010 Olympics, which saw Whistler rise to the challenge of hosting a world class event and becoming even more of a world-class destination.

The race begins with a two-loop, 2.4 mile swim in Alta Lake in Whistler's Rainbow Park. Competitors then transition to the cycling portion of the event, which is 112 miles long. This cycling route is similar in difficulty to IRONMAN Lake Placid or IRONMAN Coeur d'Alene and is one-loop, starting south on the Sea-to-Sky highway, then climbing the Callaghan Valley, returning to the highway and passing through Whistler on to Pemberton.

In Pemberton, cyclists will be greeted by cheering sections set out by Tourism Pemberton along the route, and we hope that many residents and fans will come out to cheer on the athletes.

This section of the race takes cyclists out Pemberton Meadows Road and then back to Whistler, where athletes finish the event. IRONMAN Canada offers 50 qualifying slots for the IRONMAN World Championships in Kailua-Kona.

Traffic Guide for the Subaru IRONMAN 2014

Safety is a huge concern for the IRONMAN Canada. Being able to host this competition, the 32nd annual event of its kind, is a wonderful opportunity, and we know that Pemberton is excited for it. We're in some ways an ideal community to host an event such as the IRONMAN, with quite a few residents who are past athletes in IRONMAN events choosing to live here.

Because of their concern for the safety of athletes volunteers, spectators and travellers, IRONMAN Canada is going to need to request traffic pattern changes during the day. Drivers should expect delays on the day of the event, Sunday, July 27. There is a helpful pdf showing details of the delays which also highlights other pertinent safety information, such as access to the Pemberton Clinic.

We are looking forward to cheering on athletes on Sunday, July 27th, right here in Pemberton and we hope you join us...unless you will be participating in the Subaru IRONMAN which case, here's hoping you make it to Kailua-Kona!
