Slow Food Cycle Sunday 2014

Pemberton's Slow Food Cycle Sunday, the region's largest cycling event, has a new producer - Tourism Pemberton.

The annual summer event, which brings cyclists and farmers together, has become an important regional tourism driver, attracting attention from international publications, top chefs, visionary farmers, and advocates for saving farmland. It also attracts 4,000 cyclists who spend the day riding 25 kilometres up the Pemberton Valley experiencing the area's spectacular setting and agricultural bounty.

"Slow Food Cycle Sunday is a great fit for us and our vision for tourism in the valley," says David MacKenzie, president of Tourism Pemberton. "Building on the success we had with our Ironman cheer stations earlier this year, we were looking for events and Anna and Nicki were looking for new producers.

Anna Helmer and Nicki Vankerk are the founders of the popular family-friendly summer event. The two will remain involved as the event transitions over to Tourism Pemberton.

"Tourism Pemberton is the perfect group to take Slow Food Cycle Sunday into its next decade: they have the energy and enthusiasm necessary to run a large event, and a very clear understanding of how important this annual bike ride has become to Pemberton and area. We are thankful to be passing it into their hands," says Helmer.

MacKenzie assures that while Tourism Pemberton will be taking over the function and operation of Slow Food Cycle Sunday, the spirit of the day will remain.

"It's a fantastic event that we want to see it continue to grow. And because it's growing, we'll be looking at traffic management solutions to ensure that it remains safe," he explains. "But we'll also be focusing on creating a great day celebrating the 10th anniversary of an amazing Pemberton event."

The10th Annual Slow Food Cycle Sunday will be held on August 17, 2014 in Pemberton, B.C.
